Information Technology is a broadly defined field so before listing the top 10 paying IT jobs lets define exactly what I.T. is.

The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) defines IT as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

So for the sake of simplicity let's just say working in IT means working with computers.

Almost always the highest paying IT job in any Company is the CIO (Chief Information Officer). The CIO is the head of all technology departments within a company and usually reports directly to the CEO. The average salary for a CIO is approximately $150 000 in 2008 but all of the top 10 break the 5 figure mark. So let's say that the following list is the Top 10 Paying IT jobs excluding the CIO.

IT is a growing field with a very high average salary. Since the field is an umbrella term defining many different fields the salaries are estimates and certain companies pay much higher. A recent survey of Google employees claimed that a computer programmer at Google makes between $175,000 and $225,000.
